Upcycle Project

Upcycling is the new buzzword in the “green circles”.  Upcycling is the process of converting waste or useless materials into new products of better quality or higher value.  This project has seamstresses fully set up in a Cut, Make & Trim (CMT) operation.  These seamstresses work as a team to develop a sustainable business. They earn an income in a number of ways:

  • Make to order
  • Remodelling “dead stock” into trendy, saleable garments
  • Designing garments from donated fabric
  • Repairing damaged stock

The possibilities for upcycling are endless, torn jeans are converted into trendy bags, chinos are converted into stylish skirts and oversized mens shorts are converted into girls dresses.

The seamstresses are part of our Enterprise Development programme and are learning to be independent business women by running their own business.

We would like to thank The Motsepe Foundation for funding this initiative.
