Before my life was chaos. I was living day-to-day with
no goals, no plans for the future. My first marriage was to a very abusive man. It was tough and going through it for eight years, having three children - it was a very long time. One day, I have no idea, I just thought, ‘I’m leaving this man’, and I left. I only realised the impact of what I went through after I got out. Abuse programmes your mind.

My second husband, for three years he wasn’t working. From a house in the suburbs we ended up living in a two-roomed shack with no running water.

TCB gave me this confidence of applying the things I knew in my mind, I thought, ‘I can do something with my life’. Although when I got here in my class I was the oldest, I found that I wasn’t dead yet, so there was no reason for me to give up.

When you have grown from a certain level to a certain level people tend to say, ‘She thinks she’s better,’ and I always say ’I am better’. Not out of pride, but because I’m not like I used to be. I haven’t reached where I’m going but I’ve left.
