Mother of one: 9

Lives in Khayelitsha, Cape Town

I used to cook food to sell, I made money but I thought it’s not enough because my friends are going to work. I just work hard in the morning, cook, take my tray and go. I didn’t realise it was a good business. I was busy chasing other peoples’ dreams.

There were lots of kids playing in the street. The crèche business was in my mind but I didn’t have money to start. Then I heard about TCB and it really made me who I am today. I used to think I’m nothing in my community, but after selling the clothes and opening the crèche - I see I’m something.

The kids need education, that good foundation. We feed them and teach them new things every day because they have to develop while they’re still young. I realised if we don’t give them the good foundation they won’t matriculate. It’s what inspires me.

I’ve learnt if it’s your business you must put effort in. That crèche is my business, not the ladies working for me - it’s not their dream. I don’t want my kids to suffer the way I did, so I’ll make sure that I work hard for my kids.
